The 2014 Winter Olympics started February 6th in Sochi, Russia and will end on February 23rd. This year’s games are the 22nd (XXII) Winter Olympics, and this is the first time the Olympics have been held in Russia in 34 years (since the 1980 Summer Olympics).

The Russians have been planning where the Olympics will be since 2007 so have had seven years to plan out the Olympic site on the Black Sea.

The Winter Olympics motto this year is “Hot. Cool. Yours.” The three Winter Olympic mascots, voted on by those who live in Sochi, are a polar bear, a hare, and a leopard. Many people believe that the polar bear was not one of the real winners and was only picked because it was Russian President Vladimir Putin’s favorite.

There are more than 2,500 athletes from 88 different nations competing in 15 sports in this year’s Winter Olympics. These 15 sports include Alpine Skiing, Snow Boarding, Bob Sledding, Ice Skating, and Ice Hockey.

This year is the first year that the Olympic torch passed through the North Pole and outer space. They got the torch to the North Pole using a nuclear icebreaker and then Russian cosmonauts took the torch to the International Space Station and into outer space. No flame was possible since combustion is not possible in outer space. The torch arrived for the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi at the opening ceremony on Friday, February 7th.
