It’s that time of year again – the 2017 Spelling Bee is on! Students are studying lists with hundreds of words ranging from rare and comical-sounding to those used daily.

“I like that there are challenging words that students get to know and that the students do their best,” said 3rd grade teacher Mr. Winslow, who is in charge of the school spelling bee.

The spelling bee winners the past two years were students from Mrs. Peare’s class. People are curious about who will be this year’s winner.

As the date for the spelling bee gets closer, nervousness and excitement fill the cafeteria and classrooms. At recess, several students are being quizzed by their friends. Some who forgot about the spelling bee during the holidays are now desperately trying to memorize the long list of words.

“I hope that the students have an exciting time at the bee and that they inspire other students to participate next year,” Mr. Winslow said.

Students who did well in the classroom written bee participated in the oral spelling bee on January 11, the first step in a long journey to the National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C.
